Northwest College will welcome its first-ever Fulbright Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) and seven new international students through special exchange and scholarship programs during the 2021-2022 academic year, along with other international students.

Hailing from Japan, FLTA Chiyomi Sekiguchi will teach Japanese 1010 in the fall and Japanese 1010 and 1020 in the spring. She will also run the Japanese club for the academic year and host several cultural programs throughout the year.

Additionally, NWC will welcome seven international students on prestigious scholarship programs, these include Rozina Amir Zada and Kamal Zareen of Pakistan through the International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX) program; Liudmila Komisarova, Aitalina Popova, Daria Selyutina and Andrey Obrubov of Russia through the Year of Exchange in America for Russians (YEAR) program; and Leon Ekelhoff of Germany through the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) for Young Professionals program.

These highly competitive programs aim to empower youth, create leaders, encourage students to engage with their communities, strengthen institutions and extend access to quality education.

A reception will be held to introduce Sekiguchi and these scholarship program students to the campus community Wednesday, Sept. 8, from 4:30-6 p.m. at the Intercultural House, which is located at 565 College Drive in Powell.

This event is free and open to the public.
