Back on the road after the Apodacas the Northwest College wrestling team made a quick trip to Rock Springs to take on Trinidad State, defeating the Trojans 35-24.
In a dual that featured a back-and-forth battle the Trappers and Trojans alternated victories after Northwest had established an early lead.
A forfeit at 125 gave Trinidad a 6-0 lead before a pin by Kaiden Rubash at 133 pounds (2:55), a forfeit for Treyson Davila at 141 pounds and a 17-1 tech fall in the first period for Caleb Nadig at 149 pounds established a 17-6 Trapper lead.
From that point forward the two teams alternated victories.
Trinidad earned a pin of Jack Lounsbury at 157 pounds in 4:08, before Orrin Jackson responded with a pin of his own in 3:33.
Jesse Thornton lost by pin at 174 pounds in 5:37 before Aziz Fayzullaev earned a pin in 1:48 at 184 pounds.
Josh Womack lost by pin at 197 pounds in 3:49 before Cody Pinkerton capped off the night with a pin of his own at heavyweight in 2:27.
“I was hoping for a better performance going down there,” coach Jim Zeigler said. “It felt like we were out of sync a little bit. It was a rushed trip … A little over 24 hours we did the whole trip — it’s hard to get in sync for something like that.”
Northwest will have some time to rest and prepare for the NJCAA Plains District Championship, which will be held in Powell on Saturday, Feb. 17.
Those are the national qualifiers, where wrestlers will earn the right to go to the NJCAA National Championships which are held on March 1-2 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
“We’ve got this week and next to get ready for the district qualifiers,” Zeigler said. “We’ve got to stay healthy and work hard, get our mind and everything right. We are going to continue to work hard.”
