Trapper hoops reaches second round

NWC Women Eliminated in Quarterfinals

Both the Northwest College men’s and women’s basketball teams won their first-round matches at their respective Region IX Tournaments on Sunday.

The men upset No. 3 Laramie County Community College 85- 76 Sunday evening in Sterling, Colo., while the women took down Northeastern Junior College 81-61 Sunday afternoon in Rock Springs.

The women lost Monday afternoon 83-65 to Western Nebraska Community College and are now eliminated from the tournament.

The No. 6 men faced No. 2 Sheridan Monday evening, after press time. Visit www.facebook. com/powelltribune for scores of Monday’s games and today’s (Tuesday’s) schedule. If the men win, their Tuesday game can be watched at http:// www.njcaatv.com/gonjc/

A win would advance the Trapper men to the semifinals, where they would face the winner of Monday night’s Northeastern Colorado vs. Western Nebraska quarterfinal game.

The men beat the Golden Eagles after overcoming a 36- 30 halftime deficit.

The women led Northeastern by a single point heading into the second half, but the Trappers held the Plainswomen to just 20 points to close out the win.

Sophomore Andressa Augusto returned to the court to lead the Trappers with 18 points, four assists and four rebounds in just 15 minutes.

Augusto missed the last five games of the regular season with an unspecified injury that was thought to be season-ending.

Freshman Dana Bjorhus added 16 points, four rebounds and three assists for the Trappers and Imari Simpson scored 11 points and grabbed four boards.

Freshmen Caitlin Clancy and Hatti Snyder and sophomore Sarah Nielsen all tied for the lead in rebounds with six apiece. Freshman point guard Mandee Christensen played 29 minutes, scored six points, dished out four assists and grabbed four rebounds, but also committed a game-high nine turnovers.

Stats for the men’s victory over LCCC and the women’s loss to Western Nebraska were not immediately available at press time.
