POWELL, Wyo. – The Native Ways student club at Northwest College will be hosting the 30th Annual Buffalo Feast on Thursday, November 19 at 6 p.m. in the Yellowstone Conference Center. The feast includes bison squash lasagna, Three Sisters soup, beet salad with goat cheese, apple cranberry wild rice pilaf, roasted root vegetables, and wojapi (berry soup) and cornbread.
This year’s featured speaker is Brocade Stops Black Eagle (Apsáalooke-Numakiki-Hiraacá) (Crow-Mandan-Hidatsa), who was born and raised on the Crow Indian Reservation, where she currently resides with her husband and three sons. Brocade’s mother, who was a great seamstress, named her daughter Brocade, a fabric easily distinguished by its “regal look.”
A majority of Brocade’s couture looks are created with Brocade fabric as an homage to her mother. Taught to bead at a young age, Brocade has been beading and honing her craft for over 30 years and creates one-of-a-kind regalia for her family and the horses they ride when they parade. Her ready-to-wear apparel is a direct reflection of her beadwork and lifestyle. Brocade’s beadwork is inspired by old Crow geometric designs and color palette, and she believes that “beadwork is healing” and it is how she shows love for her people.
Brocade has worked as a creative consultant and has several pieces on display at the Autry Museum in Los Angeles. She has also been featured in Cowboys & Indians magazine, and her work has been showcased in the hit television series Yellowstone. Brocade has been asked to exhibit her work on countless runways across the country, including local shows in Montana and was asked to participate in an indigenous trade mission in Paris, France.
Brocade earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Montana State University and served her community as an RN for more than a decade. She is also a Mountain Ultra Trail Runner and outdoor enthusiast, having completed several ultra marathons, including the Crazy Mountain 100.
Tickets are $30 for adults, $20 for children 12 and under, and $10 for NWC students. Those who wish to attend the event need to reserve tickets no later than November 12.
