This year’s featured speaker Mariah Gladstone, Piikuni (Blackfeet) and Tsalagi (Cherokee), grew up in Northwest Montana. Her passion is revitalizing knowledge of traditional food systems and increasing access to healthy, culturally relevant foods. A graduate from Columbia University where she earned her degree in Environmental Engineering, Gladstone returned to Montana to begin her work with food advocacy. In 2016 she launched Indigikitchen, a web-based cooking show designed to teach viewers to prepare modern, healthy meals using traditional indigenous ingredients. Through her work Gladstone wants “to promote healthy, fresh foods people can feed their families using the modern kitchen.” Gladstone deepened her interdisciplinary approach to food systems by earning a master’s degree in Coupled Natural and Human Systems from the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in 2021. Through her graduate work, Gladstone found “the intersection of culinary arts, Indigenous sustainability, land management, and diet and nutrition in ways that fall under the same umbrella and aren’t sectioned off, and I use digital media to share that information with people.”

Gladstone’s work has earned her numerous accolades. She was named a “Champion for Change” through the Center for Native American Youth, a “Culture of Health Leader” through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and a Grist 50 “Fixer.” She currently serves on the board of the Native Youth Food Sovereignty Alliance (NYFSA).  In 2020 she was selected as an MIT Solve Indigenous Communities fellow, and in 2021 she was featured on the TODAY show for her innovative work. Her latest project is the recently published children’s cookbook, Mountains to Oceans: Kids’ Recipes from Native Land (September 2024) now available on the Indigikitchen website. The book offers fun, accessible recipes that connects young readers to indigenous food traditions from across the continent.
