A Young Team

Northwest College’s men’s and women’s soccer teams are heading to the postseason and looking to bounce back after a tough end of the regular season.

In the last three games, the freshman-heavy teams went 1-2 on the men’s side and 0-3 for the women.

Last week, the NWC soccer teams were scheduled to host Sheridan College, but due to weather, the games were moved to Cody. The men beat Sheridan for the second time this season, winning 4-3 (they’d also beaten Sheridan 4-0 earlier in the year). However, the women’s game had to be rescheduled to Tuesday.

On Tuesday, the women’s team was able to face off against Sheridan, but the postponement did not bode well for NWC as they lost 4-0. That was a form of revenge for Sheridan, who Northwest had trumped 3-2 in September.

Both the women’s and men’s soccer teams lost on the road last weekend to Trinidad State Junior College on Friday and Otero Junior College on Saturday.

Trinidad defeated the NWC women 3-0.

The women’s team showed some offensive improvement from a 2-0 loss to Otero in September. On Saturday, NWC scored three goals, but still fell short in a 6-3 loss.

On the men’s side, Trinidad defeated the Trappers, 2-0, following up on a 3-1 win in September. NWC and Otero faced off for the first time on Saturday, with Otero winning 4-0.

This weekend, both NWC teams will travel to the Region IX Tournament Quarter Finals. The men’s team will be traveling back to Otero Junior College and the women’s team will travel to the location of the highest seed. As of press time, this location was not available. The Tribune was unable to reach coach Rob Hill.

Of the 23 players on the men’s team, 17 are freshman, as are 12 of the 19 players on the women’s team.

The NWC men’s overall record stands at 4-7-1 and the women’s at 4-8-1.
