Lady Trappers Scrimmage North Idaho On Wednesday

Injury-Depleted Team Plays Tough In Season Opener Against Solid Competition

The Northwest College women’s soccer team squared off against visiting North Idaho College Wednesday morning in its first live scrimmage against a different team, losing 3-0.

“I thought the girls did great,” said NWC head coach Aaron Miller. “We played three 30-minute segments, and in my opinion, we won two out of the three. Just a couple of moments where we made little errors, but we were spread thin a little bit. But I think we took it to them; there were moments in that game where our opponent didn’t even want to run at us anymore.”

Despite playing short-handed and without the benefit of substitutions due to injuries, the Lady Trappers held the Lady Cardinals to a scoreless tie after one period.

But with just over three minutes to play in the second period, NIC broke the stalemate to take a 1-0 lead. The Lady Cardinals scored twice more late in the third to cap off the 3-0 win.

Douglas’ Alexa Williams got the start in net for the Lady Trappers, and proved why she was first-team All-State last season, making several nice saves.

“Alexa did fantastic , we give her a little bit more support defensively, she’ll keep contributing in that fashion,” Miller said. “Our second goalkeeper, Ashlynn Cornelison, stepped up and played the field for us today; she’s in her own right a very solid goalkeeper as well.”

The Lady Trappers are back in action Saturday, on the road against Rocky Mountain JV in Billings.

Miller said he and his team will continue fine-tuning things until then.

“I thought today was a great effort,” he said. “They went out there and did what they needed to do. They’re a pretty bonded group with a lot of team chemistry. We get a couple of people off injuries and a couple of these late arrivals show up, I think we’ll be competitive.”
