Big Horn Basin residents are invited to attend the “Small Scale Public Art: Selected Works from the College's Collections” exhibition reception Tuesday, Oct. 24, from 4:30-6 p.m. in the Cabre Building’s Northwest Gallery.

Beginning in the early 1980s, the Northwest College Board of Trustees has purchased selections from student fine art and photography exhibitions. Those purchases comprise the core of Northwest's permanent collection.

Additionally, the NWC Art Department possesses a collection of work purchased from, or gifted by students, alumni and visiting artists. These works, combined with the Northwest College Foundation’s collections, include more than 450 separate pieces of artwork.

“Oftentimes, when people think of public art, they picture large scale, outdoor monuments or sculptures,” said Denise Kelsay, NWC art and galleries coordinator. “This exhibition aims to highlight the small scale public art on campus to help people realize that NWC’s public art is accessible and present in their everyday environment.”

Works from these collections are displayed across the NWC campus, the Nelson House, the Intercultural House, the A. L. Mickelson Field Station and the Cody Center.

“Anywhere Northwest College has a presence, we hang art to share with the public—this exhibition shines a light on those works,” Kelsay noted.

During the reception, a brief history of the collection is to be presented with a question and answer opportunity for participants. Light refreshments will be available. This event is free and open to the public.

For more information about this exhibition, contact Kelsay at denise.kelsay@nwc.edu or 307-754-6499.

The Northwest Gallery is open Mon-Fri, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., and Thursdays from 7-9 p.m.
