POWELL, Wyo. - The Northwest College Jazz Band I and Jazz Band II recreate the crafted style and energy of big band jazz at a 7:30 p.m. concert Tuesday, May 8, in the Nelson Performing Arts Center Auditorium.

Fresh off the road after earning superior college division ratings from adjudicators at last month’s UNC/Greeley Jazz Festival, Jazz Band I starts the evening with some of the tunes that scored those rankings.

Directed by Neil Hansen, the group also performs selected pieces from this year’s repertoire. Featured soloists include Nick Pierson, Amos Helvey, Drew Brown and Hayden Woods.

Included on the Jazz I playlist are “Pythagatha” by Tim Davies; and Alan Baylock arrangements of Duke Ellington’s “Caravan” and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” featuring trumpeters Monte Nickles and Lyman Gillan.

The evening continues with three tunes by Jazz Band II. Craig Olson directs the group in “Café Rio” by Mike Tomaro, “Funk City” by John Wasson and Don Schamber’s arrangement of “Time After Time.”

Rocky Mountain High School sophomore Sam Woodis will join Jazz II soloists Wes Hogg, Pierson, Gillen and Woods.

Admission to the concert is free.
