The community was initially named Paintrock, in 1896, after the
nearby cliffs which were covered with pictographs and petroglyphs.
Paintrock was renamed Hyattville after store owner and first postmaster, Sam Hyatt.
Asa Mercer settled here after leaving Cheyenne following the
publication of Banditti of the Plains. Banditti of the Plains was a
harsh portrayal of cattlemen during the Johnson County War.
Hyattville is situated between Paint Rock Creek and Medicine Lodge Creek.
