PHS, NWC alum heads to NCAA Tourney

Leslie Thronburg, a former Powell High School and Northwest College basketball standout, and her UT Tyler women’s basketball teammates are headed to the NCAA Division III Championship tournament.

The UT Tyler Patriots beat Mary Hardin-Baylor 68-56 on Sunday to claim the American Southwest Conference championship and earn an automatic bid to the tournament. 

Thronburg, a 5-11 junior forward, is averaging 2.9 points and two rebounds in 6.6 minutes per game in her first season at UT Tyler. 

The Patriots are seeded third in the South region and will play No. 4 Maryville College in Memphis at 4 p.m. (MT) on Friday at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn. 

Thronburg attended PHS from 2007-11, and led the Panthers with 10.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.8 assists and two steals per game her senior year. 

During her sophomore year at Northwest, Thronburg tied for the team lead in rebounds with 6.3 a game and was third with 10.2 points per game.
