Northwest Builds Momentum

It is a double-take number – 35-2.

The one boggling statistic that came out of the Northwest College women’s basketball team’s two victories last week was worthy of archeological preservation.

The Lady Trappers defeated Little Big Horn 87-48 and Miles Community College 76-49.

Tucked into the middle of the home win over Miles City, Mont., last Saturday was a 35-2 second-quarter plurality by Northwest that shocked even coach Janis Beal.

She and assistant coach Steve Coleman took a quick glance at the statistics going into halftime and were flabbergasted by how thoroughly their players dominated the previous 10 minutes of play.

“It was, ‘Wow, OK,’” Beal said. “I’ll just challenge the girls to do that again.”

The odds of that happening are about the same as a Hillary Clinton presidential politics comeback.

Northwest raised its record to 11-9 with the two wins, the first last week on the road in Montana and the second in Powell.

That quarter turned the Miles game into a rout with absolutely no other scoring out of the usual in the other three periods.

Defensive pressure triggered the onslaught and capitalizing on the self-made breaks. Northwest committed just three turnovers and forced 16 by Miles in the first half. The Trappers were also credited with 10 steals for the game.

Also, Beal loved that the Lady Trappers collected 20 assists on their 31 baskets.

Kira Marlow, who had the hot hand for the week, picked off three of those steals. Marlow, a freshman from Shelley, Idaho, and Charri McArthur, a freshman from Lovell, each scored 15 points against Miles.

Marlow led the team with 25 points against Little Big Horn. Dallas Petties added 10 in that game.

“I hope we can use this and carry some momentum forward,” Beal said of the two wins.
