English Major

Do you love words and language?

The English major at Northwestern is geared toward preparing you for a career in writing, literature or advanced study in graduate school.

Prepare to see your work in print. Our literary magazine, Inkstone, provides a creative inlet (and outlet!) for student writing. Northwestern’s English & Literature professors are published authors and scholars who will challenge your thinking and encourage you to achieve excellence for God’s glory.

Students discuss the inspiration behind their choice of major and reveal a softer side to literature.

As an English major, you get to choose electives that allow you to focus on specific authors, genres, periods or themes, or creative, expository or technical writing.

The English major offers four concentrations:

  • Linguistics
  • Literature
  • Literature & Writing
  • Writing
