What is Inkstone?Inkstone is the literary arts magazine of Northwestern College. Its mission is to encourage and showcase creative writing at the college. All current Northwestern students are eligible to submit work. Begun in the fall of 1998, Inkstone is published once every semester and features poetry, short stories, personal essays, and art work by current students. A team of English students serves as the Inkstone editorial staff under the direction of Judith Hougen, Inkstone advisor. The magazine is entirely student-run, utilizing students for the selection of pieces, the creative theme, and the layout and design. Creative Writing CompetitionEvery spring, Inkstone sponsors a creative writing contest. All submissions accepted for the fall and spring issues of the magazine are considered finalists for the competition. An alumnus English major (writing emphasis) reads through the two issues and selects the best writing in poetry and prose. The winners receive gift certificates to Barnes & Noble, and they are formally recognized during Honors Chapel in April. Fine Print ReadingEvery spring, Inkstone co-sponsors the Fine Print Reading, which celebrates the writing and writers of Inkstone. Student writers who had work featured in either of the two issues printed that year are invited to read their work at the Coffee Grounds, a coffee shop near campus.
