An employer’s potential for liability in sponsoring an internship is similar to the liability it faces for regular employees.
Internships share the same concerns: employment discrimination, harassment, workers’ compensation, wage and hour problems, unemployment compensation, and other employment related issues. The employer would control all aspects of the work and provide the intern’s supervisor and training.
The best way to reduce risk for each agent is clear communication and preparation.
Northwestern asks for the following:
Detailed description of the internship.
Signed agreement between Northwestern College and your organization (the internship provider) which outlines the responsibilities of each agent.
