Your decade began with the year of the Eagles! Men’s basketball won the NCCAA-I championship and women’s volleyball received the highest NCAA honor with the Student-Athlete Sportsmanship Award. Plus, the Billy Graham Community Life Commons takes shape on campus.
Starting a new millennium, you and your classmates celebrated NWC's centennial, welcomed President Alan Cureton and several new majors, set new enrollment records, commemorated the Mel Johnson Media Center, produced NWC’s first four student Fulbright scholars and witnessed the launch of the new college logo identity.
You witnessed NWC expand at many levels. You saw the beginning of the FOCUS adult degree program and Distance Education. The new Reynolds Field and Ericksen Center become the hub of Eagle athletics. And the Berntsen Resource Center provided a much-improved library space.
In this decade of academic growth and expansion, you enjoyed new buildings, including Moyer Hall, the Robertsen Student Center, Knutson and Hartill residences and the Totino Fine Arts Center. Dr. Donald Ericksen became the sixth president, and the cafeteria moved to Nazareth Hall from Riley.
President Bill Berntsen reopened the "New Northwestern" on its new campus in Roseville with 186 students. You celebrated NWC’s 75 years with the Diamond Jubilee, featuring former president Billy Graham. The entire college community rejoiced in receiving official accreditation.
Beginning with second president Billy Graham and ending with fifth president, William Berntsen, this was the era of the final years on the downtown Minneapolis campus, with Memorial Hall the center of college life. The college grieved when Roger Youderian ’50 was martyred in Ecuador.
You knew Dr. William Bell Riley, Northwestern's founder and first president, and likely took classes with Dr. Moyer or Dr. Hartill. Billy Graham became president and inspired students in 1948 to help launch Northwestern's first radio station, KTIS.
