NWC volleyball goes 3-1 over the weekend

The Northwest College volleyball team extended its winning streak to nine over the weekend before falling to No. 5-ranked Western Nebraska.

The Lady Trappers, who competed at the Wyo-Braska Tournament in Scottsbluff, Neb., posted a 3-1 record to push their season mark to 13-7.

NWC claimed its first match Friday with a 25-21, 25-22, 25-13 victory over Butler Community College. In game two, the Trappers knocked off Lamar CC 25-16, 25-14, 25-10. Saturday saw NWC defeat McCook CC 25-19, 25-10, 25-22.

Against Western Nebraska, however, NWC coach Shaun Pohlman was unhappy with his team’s setting performance, and was forced to make some personnel changes that ultimately came up short for the Trappers. NWC lost to the Cougars in five sets, 16-25, 25-17, 19-25, 25-21, 13-15.

“Our team played well, they played a strong match as a whole. But when you’re competing against the No. 5 team in the country, you cannot have a poor setting performance,” Pohlman said. “With that said though, it’s positive to know that we were right there with the number-five team despite a low hitting and setting performance.”

For the weekend, Teodora Tepavac led NWC with 47 kills and freshman Aleksandra Djordjevic, the reigning NJCAA Player of the Week, had 37. The Trappers hosted the Rocky Mountain College JV team Monday in a makeup contest at Cabre Gym. Results will be in the Thursday edition of the Powell Tribune.
