Picking Up Pace

The travels continued last week for Trapper soccer as both teams were on the road at Sheridan College Wednesday, Sept. 21.

The matches against the Generals went well, with two Northwest wins as the Lady Trappers came out on top of a 3-2 score and the men blanked Sheridan 4-0.

It was seemingly a one-woman show in the win, with Kenisha Melanson scoring all three goals for Northwest.

“It was 0-0 at halftime, and to Sheridan’s credit, they were the better team in the first half,” head coach Rob Hill said. “They started with more intensity than we had and they had a few opportunities, so when it was still nil-nil at half; we talked about how this was an opportunity for us.”

Melanson got the scoring started in the second half on a free kick, but the Lady Generals evened things up a few minutes later.

Then, Melanson followed a Trapper shot on goal that was deflected by the Sheridan keeper and put it past for a 2-1 lead.

Again the Generals evened things up on a penalty kick, but Melanson had one more answer when, with five minutes left, Meghan Attenborough booted a shot toward goal from the right, with Melanson near the back post and putting it away.

“At that point we switched things up more defensively and held on the rest of the way,” Hill said.

For the men, three goals came in the first half to all but put the game away.

Liam Randles got it started and was followed by scores from Lucas Ferrer and Jay Younger to put the Trappers up 3-0 at the intermission.

“We started sharp, but it dropped off in the second half a bit, which will happen when you get a lead like that,” Hill said.

Dropped off perhaps, but not enough to allow a score, and Randoes added one more on a penalty kick to provide for the final margin.

Next up was a Saturday trip in the opposite direction to Price, Utah, to face the Golden Eagles of Utah State East.

Things didn’t go quite so well for the Lady Trappers in this one, as the Eagles took a 2-1 lead by halftime and added a score in the second half for a 3-1 win.

Emily Ginley had Northwest’s lone score for the match.

The Trapper men, however, were able to pick up their second win of the week, edging East by a 2-1 score.

Younger got an assist from Jacob Lamm and booted it home in the 21st minute, giving Northwest the early lead.

Just four minutes later, Younger scored again to up the difference to two goals, but East’s Omar Nila scored off an Ian Thompson assist to cut the margin in half in the 37th minute.

From there, however, the Trapper defense made that one-goal lead stand up and hang on for the win.

“We actually were a man down for the last 55 minutes after getting a red card that I really don’t agree with,” Hill said. “It was unfortunate, but the guys made it hold up.

“The men’s team has three road wins in a row and they’ve got it going, playing with confidence and playing well. The girls have the ability, they have the talent; it’s just a matter of the mental with them and playing with the intensity they need to on a more consistent basis.”

The Lady Trappers’ season record now stands at 2-4-1, with the men at 3-3, and both teams are in action Saturday on the road at Western Wyoming in Rock Springs.
