Queertessential exhibit opening Wednesday, Feb. 11, speaks to equality

POWELL, Wyoming — “Queertessential,” an artistic exploration of equality, opens with a 7 p.m. artist’s reception Wednesday, Feb. 11, in Northwest College’s SinClair Gallery.

Artists contributing to the exhibit were challenged to help start a discussion about the complexities of creating equality for everyone by illustrating the most queer or atypical examples of equality. These examples are presented as paintings, photographs and writings by students in NWC’s Gay-Straight Alliance,

The subject of marriage rights has recently risen to the top of equality issues under discussion in the Equality State, but that’s only the tip of the iceberg, according to students in the Gay-Straight Alliance, a support and advocacy group for LGBTQA individuals (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning and asexual). LGBTQA individuals deal with equality issues related to adoption, visitation of loved ones in hospitals and numerous other everyday rights taken for granted by many.

The premise of “Queertessential” is that people must first understand each other before they can create equality for each other.

The exhibit hangs in SinClair through Feb. 27. Located in the Orendorff Building, the gallery is open weekedays from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is free.
