Northwest Civic Orchestra and Collegiate Choir in final concert of the season May 2 at NWC

POWELL, Wyo. – The Northwest Civic Orchestra and Collegiate Choir culminate the 2014-15 season Saturday, May 2, with a 7:30 p.m. concert in the Nelson Performing Arts Center Auditorium.

Maurine Akin will conduct the orchestra’s performance of an eclectic mix of compositions celebrating the many faces of spring. The repertoire includes “Buckaroo Holiday” by Copland and familiar classics like Strauss’ “Voices of Spring Waltz.” Akin will be featured in a double spotlight as conductor and soloist in “Spring” from Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons.”

NWC Assistant Professor of Music Jan Kliewer, who retires this year after a long career as a music educator, will direct the Northwest College Choir. Accompanied by the orchestra, the choir takes the stage after intermission to perform “Requiem” by French composer Maurice Duruflé. Published in 1947 and considered a classic work of the 20th century, the piece stays true to the ancient chanted melodies associated with the requiem, but in a new setting.

“This isn’t your father’s requiem,” Kliewer said. “It’s lush, beautiful, hopeful and uplifting.” This version also includes organ accompaniment.

Immediately following the concert, the audience is invited to a reception in Room 29 of the Nelson Performing Arts Center to meet the students and musicians from around the area who combine their talents to perform in choir and orchestra concerts each spring and fall.

General admission to the concert is $7 for adults; senior citizens pay $5. NWC students and children 12 and under are admitted free.
