NWC women's soccer split last week

The Northwest College men’s and women’s soccer teams each went 1-1 after road trips last week.

On Wednesday, the Lady Trappers downed Sheridan College, 4-1, before the men posted their second straight shutout with a 2-0 victory.

Against Sheridan, the NWC women trailed 1-0 at halftime before Gabby Gonzales earned a hat trick with back-to-backto-back goals. Her first, off an assist from Caddie Boline in the 61st minute, tied the match. She struck again on an unassisted goal before Ellen Hunsaker found her for a third tally to push the Trapper lead to 3-1. Hunsaker aided Mia Stewart’s goal late in the match to finish the scoring.

Despite the scoring outburst, NWC men’s and women’s coach Rob Hill was disappointed with what he called “lackadaisical and individualized” play.

“We just didn’t play with a lot of intensity or energy,” Hill said. “It’s definitely a game we learned from, but it was one of those games where we won but felt like we lost.”

Stewart shared time in goal with teammate Taylor Meeks, and the two keepers saved five shots apiece.

On Friday, a road trip to Western Wyoming saw the Lady Trappers fall 2-1, a performance that had Hill frustrated with numerous missed opportunities.

“We had at least eight clear chances to score and just didn’t finish,” he said. “We played 100 times better against Western Wyoming than we did against Sheridan, believe it or not, but we have to learn to finish.”

Boline’s cross kick to Amberly Halstead, who converted the pass into a score, accounted for the Trappers’ lone goal of the match.
