NWC's Concert Band and College Choir perform in concert Monday, Nov. 10

POWELL, Wyo. ─ The Northwest College Concert Band and College Choir perform at a combined concert Monday, Nov. 10, at 7:30 p.m. in the Nelson Performing Arts Center Auditorium.

Under the direction of Jan Kliewer, the NWC Choir will offer a few selections from their recent choral sampler, exploring musical compositions from 16th century Europe to 19th century American folk music.

In preparation for the Christmas season, they’ll sing “O Nata Lux,” by American composer Morten Johannes Lauridsen and close with “Hope, Faith, Life, Love,” a contemporary piece by Eric Whitaker based on ee Cummings’ poem of the same title.

Visiting Instructor of Music and Director of Bands Craig Olson conducts the NWC Concert Band in Zo Elliott’s “British Eighth March” and Sousa’s well-known “El Capitan.” The ensemble renders a  poignant tribute to the victims and survivors of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing in “Silent Stands the Elm,” inspired by the symbolism and message of The Survivor Tree, the iconic American elm which survived the blast. The band finishes with Steven Reineke’s “River of Life,” a composition full of “soaring melodies, unique harmonies and exciting rhythms.”

The choir joins the band to close the concert with Carmen Dragon’s “America, the Beautiful.”

Admission to the concert is free.
