The Northwest College men’s soccer team finished its preseason with a 2-2 tie on the road against Montana State University-Billings Wednesday.

The NWC men finished the scrimmage portion of their season with a 1-2-1 record.

Against MSU-B, Ryan Montgomery opened the scoring near the 15-minute mark with a goal off an Omar Garcia assist. Near the 32nd minute, NWC pushed its lead to 2-0 when Sam White sank a header into the YellowJackets’ net.

MSU-B cut the Trappers’ lead by one with a goal in the 60th minute of the second half before adding the equalizing tally nearly 10 minutes later to account for the final score.

Brayden Searle had a chance to give NWC a last-second win, but his shot on the run was just outside the post.

In light of the tie, Trappers coach Rob Hill expressed optimism over the result of the preseason and what it means for the future.

“Overall I was happy with the performance of the team,” Hill said. “We have come a long way in  four weeks and pre-season has been fantastic preparation for the upcoming regular season. ”

The Trapper women did not play last Wednesday, and ended their scrimmage schedule on Aug. 24 with a 5-0 loss at the hands of the University of Mary. The Lady Trappers finished 0-3 in the preseason.

Against U-Mary, the Trapper men earned a 5-2 victory, fueled by goals from five players: Travis Hopkins, Montgomery,  Garcia, Jeremiah Gagnone and Sean McManamon.

Results of the both the men’s and women’s regular season openers against Utah State University Eastern from Saturday will run in the Thursday edition of the Powell Tribune.
