Trapper Bonanza to offer big payouts

Northwest College Booster Club Golf Tourney Set For May 10

The Trapper Bonanza golf tournament returns to the Powell Golf Club with a new wrinkle for 2014.

A Calcutta-style auction and six-hole competition will add another layer of fun and intensity to the annual Trapper Booster Club tournament.

“It’s always been a great tournament,” said Brian Erickson, Trapper Booster Club liaison. “I think what we’ve done in the past has been real successful. And we’re going to try something else this year to get more support.”

The two-day event will raise money for the Northwest College Trapper Booster Club.

“All proceeds go to the athletics, to help us have opportunities to recruit student-athletes ... and give our athletes an opportunity to have a great experience when they’re here,” Erickson said.

The Saturday, May 10, tournament will still feature an 18-hole, four-man scramble with a $900 payout for the first-, second- and third-place teams. On top of that will be a ninth-hole challenge ($500) and concurrent six-hole competition, the payout of the latter will be determined by an auction held on the night of May 9.

“We’ve always just done the Trapper Bonanza where it’s a four-man scramble, we’ve changed nothing there,” Erickson said. “We thought to do something different, something new, maybe just six holes that would make it a little different, a little challenging.”

The Calcutta will take place over six consecutive, yet-to-be announced holes. Golfers will keep two separate scorecards, one for the 18-hole scramble and one of the Calcutta.

The Trapper Bonanza promises to be “the best-paying tournament of the season,” and when “you add the Calcutta into it it’s going to be even more,” Erickson said.

The Friday night auction will follow a catered steak dinner and social hour. Patrons can bid on auction items, including foursomes that could win them prize money during the following day’s action.

Golf equipment such as drivers, wedges and putters and Northwest College athletic apparel will be raffled off and Saturday’s flag prizes include cash and gift certificates.

Teams can register by calling Denise Kobbe, Northwest’s senior program assistant for athletics, at 754-6640. Registration costs $100 per golfer and $400 per team.

Team registration covers costs for the steak dinner, a drink ticket, golf and cart fees and a Trapper gift.
