POWELL, Wyo. - Musical performances by student groups from Casper, Powell and Riverton earned special recognition at the Northwest Jazz Festival, March 23-25, in Powell.

Riverton High School’s Jazz Ensemble, directed by Aric Hageman, took top honors in the band competition, followed by Natrona County High School’s Big Band, directed by Shawn Weis. Twenty bands performed during the festival.

Of the 20 vocal groups who competed, Powell High School’s EROCNE, directed by John Miller, claimed the top spot. Douglas High School’s Happenstance, directed by Randy Gifford, placed second.

The NC Combo from Natrona County High School was the only ensemble that performed in the combo category, a fortunate distinction since the group was invited to open at the 24th Annual Yellowstone Jazz Festival Saturday, July 16, in Cody.

The Northwest Jazz Festival celebrated its 28th year in 2010. The annual event draws high school and college music groups from a multi-state region. It is directed by Neil Hansen, director of bands at Northwest College.
