Transfer Information

Northwestern College (NWC) is a private nondenominational Christian College that accepts college-level coursework with grades of C- or higher from accredited institutions. Courses are transferred on an individual basis. Northwestern College does not accept an Associate in Arts degree as satisfying core curriculum (general education) requirements because of the Bible courses integrated into Northwestern's degrees.

Previous Institutions
Previously attended institutions must be approved by regional or professional accrediting associations or be otherwise recognized by the college (e.g. Credit Transfer Agreements, etc.).

Transferable Credits
Degree-counting (college-level) courses completed at other institutions with grades of C- or higher are transferable. The total number of Transferable Credits along with Credits by Examination (see below) determines students' class standing (sophomore, junior, etc.).

Applicable Credits
The number of Transferable Credits that can be applied toward the student's chosen academic program.

Preliminary Transfer Credit Evaluation
This report, which is generated by the Transfer Counselor, lists all transferable credit courses along with corresponding NWC courses. Report also provides bottom line totals for Transferable and Applicable Credits. Upon completion, a copy is provided to the student.

Curriculum Chart
Each program has a chart showing courses required for completion of degree requirements. Upon completion of the Preliminary Transfer Course Report, the Transfer Counselor completes the appropriate Curriculum Chart, which shows how credits already earned apply to the chosen program.

Academic Residence Requirements
Transfer students enrolled in an associate or bachelor's degree program must earn the final 30 credits at Northwestern. Additionally, a minimum of 50 percent of major and minor coursework must be completed at Northwestern. Finally, students must have completed a minimum of 60 credits at Northwestern to be eligible for graduation honors.

Core Curriculum Requirements
All courses must be college-level to fulfill requirements. Please see course catalog or contact Transfer Counselor for details. Requirements vary depending on major.

Bible Requirements For Transfer Students
Transfer students who first enroll at Northwestern as sophomores, juniors, or seniors (based upon the number of Transferable Credits and Credits by Examination [which were taken before matriculation]) are permitted to fulfill the required Bible courses on a proportional basis.* Transfer work taken at another institution after initial enrollment at Northwestern is not counted to determine the amount of Bible credits required to be taken.

Credit By Examination
Credit for selected courses may be secured by students who demonstrate competency by means of scores on standardized examinations. A student may receive a maximum of 32 semester credits by this means. Accepted standardized examinations:

Advanced Placement (AP)
International Baccalaureate (IB)
College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)
Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES)
NWC constructed examinations (e.g. BIB 1001, 1002, etc.)

Transfer Scholarship
Transfer students who have completed 12 or more college credits (with a cumulative college GPA of 3.0 or higher) after graduating from high school are eligible.
