Tough Weekend In Havre For NWC Rodeo

Looking To ‘Turn It Around In Dillon’

The Northwest College men’s and women’s rodeo teams each placed fourth at the Montana State University — Northern rodeo in Havre, Montana, over the weekend.

Host MSU won both the men’s and women’s rodeos, increasing their leads in the Big Sky Region standings. Before the competition in Havre, the NWC men were about 300 points behind Montana State in second place; now the Trappers trail by 651 points. The Lady Trappers, meanwhile, sit in fourth place in the region, trailing the Lady Bobcats by 810.5 points.

“We didn’t draw very good in some events and in some events we did and they didn’t compete very good,” head coach Del Nose said of the men’s performance.

In the saddle bronc event, Calvin Shaffer took second with 139 points, placing him sixth in the Big Sky Region.

Orrin Ouska placed eighth in bareback with 113 points and is sitting in 10th place in the region.

In tie-down roping, Caleb McMillan took second and Bubba Boots placed fifth.

“Not making up any excuses for them, they just had a tough weekend,” Nose said. 

In the Big Sky Region, McMillan currently ranks second in all-around with 746.5 points, with Boots in third with 514.5 points. 

McMillan also ranks fifth for saddle bronc, fourth in bull riding and third in tie-down roping. 

Boots sits in 13th place for tiedown roping, fifth in steer wrestling and second in team roping alongside Matthew Williams, 

In bull riding, Marc Dorendorf is in seventh and Kolten Moss is in 11th. 

Jake Griffel ranks 14th in tiedown roping and fifth in team roping alongside partner Dawson Cvancara. 

LADY TRAPPERS
While Nose said that the girls put in a good rodeo, “they are a work in progress, too.” 

In Havre, team ropers Kaitlyn Neegard, at header, and Brook Winward, as heeler, placed fifth with a time of 23.1 seconds.

For the Big Sky Region, Winward sits in third place in breakaway roping with 165.5 points; in goat tying, Scout Yochum is in 10th place with 88 points. 

This Friday through Sunday, the rodeo teams will compete in their last rodeo of the fall season in Dillon, Montana, at the University of Montana — Western Rodeo.

“[We’re] hoping we can turn some of it around in Dillon,” said Nose of the team’s regional standings.
