Northwest Women Improve To 7-4

The numbers were the kind that please stats aficionados.

Seven players in double figures. A team total of 26 assists. And a final score of 113-56.

That’s the way the Northwest College women’s basketball team handled Tohono O’odham Community College in a Twin Falls, Idaho tournament over the weekend.

“It gave us a good opportunity for everybody to play and score,” said coach Janis Beal of the rout.

Six of the seven double-figure scorers came off the bench and as a team the 7-4 Lady Trappers hit 12 out of 25 three-point attempts, while going to the free-throw line more than twice as often as the Sells, Ariz., school and outrebounding their foes 56-39.

The 26 assists, Beal said, “showed we’re passing the ball well.”

Charri McArthur and Savanna Savage scored 16 points each for Northwest, followed by Kaylee Brown with 14, Shelby Wardell with 13, Samantha McCrorey and Alexi Payne with 11, and Julynna da Silva Sa with 10. Payne also had eight assists.

However, it was a different story on the same trip when the Trappers were out-pointed by Arizona Western 58-55.

That game was close throughout until Western pulled out by 11 points and Northwest scrambled to cut the margin in the closing minutes.

“We battled back,” Beal said.

Most of the time coaches are happy when their teams don’t foul, but when the Trappers had zero fouls in the fourth quarter they had difficulty disrupting Western’s possessions because they couldn’t put them on the foul line.

“We spent a lot of time trying to foul,” Beal said of accumulating enough fouls to put their opponents in the bonus so the Trappers could get the ball back. “In kind of a sense, it hurt us. They’re a really good team. They were a good test for us.”

Guard Tala Aumua-Tuisavuvra scored a team-high 13 points for the Trappers and da Silva Sa had 12.
