  • When Big Horn County was formed in 1896, Basin and Otto were locked in a tight race for the county seat. At the last moment Cody, which was in Big Horn County at that time, entered the race. The western portion of the county split its vote between Cody and Otto, and Basin became the county seat.
  • The trial for the Spring Creek Raid, which was the last major encounter of the turn of the century range war, was held in Basin.
  • Basin holds the record for the August high temperature in Wyoming. On August 8, 1983 the temperature officially reached 115 degrees.
